LAS brings together through Bitches, Witches & Shots a group of women artists that work on the wide notion of censorship in regards to the body, words, thoughts, sexuality, intellect, personality and gender issues. We believe there is always something unsaid about women and the artists we've invited for this occasion feel the same way: women censure themselves in many ways and are taught to do so since they are born.
Because of preconceived ideas on women-hood including censorship and denial, women have been portrayed over the years as obscure, weird, mysterious, being labeled as witches or bitches in a very superfluous way, according to the constant judgment of what a woman “should be”, as defined by a patriarchal society and narrowed to mostly domestic related labors.
Since the beginning of times, our feminine nature has been re-defined from a masculine perspective, standard and pattern, not only in terms of representation yet in every aspect of our lives. As a result, history has blocked and erased the uniqueness, the rare and special nature of our gender, its instability that awakens sensuality, sensuousness and the raging nature of our thoughts and being, when compared in parallel to the masculine gender.
For Bitches, Witches & Shots we intend to be inclusive as individuals, to speak about natural and plural phenomena rethinking and renegotiating the worlds’ seen from a feminine perspective, viewed from our side as manifested through art, nature and our work, as we enter in a new historical time characterized by inclusiveness and plurality. This is the nature of this exhibition.
